Gardiner family papers, 1882-1972 (bulk 1920-1950).

Correspondence, diaries and writings, ephemera and photographs relating to the Gardiner family of Tucson, and John H. Gardiner's service in World War I and his work as an engineer for the U.S.G.S. water survey. The collection is primarily correspondence from and to family members; there is correspondence from John to his parents during his training and deployment in the Medical Corps during World War I. Other correspondence is between John and Edith Gardiner during their marriage, and from Christine Ramsey Gardiner while a young woman. Also correspondence is present from John detailing his work traveling in Arizona with the U.S.G.S. Photographs include early Tucson homes, the San Xavier Mission, family members, Buehman Studios' views of Tucson, "A" Day 1916, excursions to Sabino Canyon and Mount Lemmon, an interior of a bicycle shop, a burning home, and various small towns in Arizona.

John Gardiner, Sr. (1846-1930) was a prominent civil engineer and Tucson resident since 1881. His son, John H. Gardiner (1894-1956) was the USGS Water Survey District Engineer for Arizona.
